Why the Premier League could delay the implementation of the semi-automated offside system

  • The Premier League is expected to delay the introduction of semi-automated offside technology until next season.
  • The system was due to be introduced to the league next year, but clubs have been told it may not be 100% accurate.
  • FIFA used the system during the 2022 World Cup, while UEFA and other European leagues have started using it.

Earlier this year, Premier League clubs voted to introduce semi-automated offside technology in the 2024/25 season.

However, due to some issues, the implementation of the system is expected to be delayed until next season.

England’s top-flight refereeing has been heavily criticized for controversial decisions, particularly regarding the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

It was due to be introduced this season to replace the Hawk-Eye system, bringing more scrutiny and criticism to the Premier League. The current system involves VAR technicians drawing lines manually on a screen.

Premier League clubs have been told they are concerned the system is not 100 percent accurate. This means it could be postponed until next season.

The report adds that the delay is also due to the Premier League choosing to use a different system to FIFA, UEFA and other leagues.

They hope the new system, once implemented, will reduce the offside decision by around 31 seconds.

The technology has been controversial in Spain. Robert Lewandowski’s goal for Barcelona was ruled out because the technology could not differentiate his toe from that of the defender.
