Auburn police chief to retire in January after 27 years of service

Auburn Police Chief James Slayton will retire on January 20, 2025, marking 27 years and one day since beginning his career with the department.

Slayton, who became chief in July 2021, cited family and health as the main reasons for his decision, aiming to spend more time with loved ones, including his new grandson.

During his tenure, Slayton led initiatives such as securing body cameras, launching a mental health crisis team and achieving department accreditation.

Auburn officials, grateful for his leadership, are working to name a successor before he leaves.
