Ann Arbor Planning Commission OK, Home Business Regulations

THE Ann Arbor Planning Commission approved a report aimed at giving more flexibility to home-based businesses and sent it to the city council.

The Board directed the Commission to examine home-based occupations and accessory business units, or ACUs. The recommendations include separate regulations between a home-based business and an ACU, which is a separate structure on the property.

Deputy planning manager Hank Kelly says uses of the latter tend to be more intensive.

“Maybe you have a small massage therapy practice. You could have a little coffee. And the physical modifications are much more robust because they meet the public health and safety goals of commercial properties in general.

A question that still needs to be resolved was raised by Planning Commission Chairman Wonwoo Lee. He asks what happens to ACU if the company goes bankrupt. Can the structure be reused or sold to a non-resident?
