Miley Cyrus Reveals Why Her Godmother Dolly Parton Shaded Her For ‘She Was Young’

Dolly Parton had mixed feelings about one of his goddaughters Miley Cyrus‘ recent successes.

In a new cover interview with Harper’s BazaarCyrus opened up about the release of her vulnerable 2023 hit “Used to Be Young” and why Parton was a little shady upon first hearing the song.

“She said, ‘I don’t know if I like this new song ‘Used to Be Young’ because it’s not fair that you’re singing about not being young when you’re young and beautiful.” said Cyrus, 31, of Parton, 78, who the “Flowers” singer recalled adding, “‘And here I am — I’m like 80 years old — and I’m like, ‘That should have been my song !””

Released August 2023 on Cyrus’ deluxe version Endless summer vacation “Used to Be Young” found the star reflecting on her partying days while coming to terms with the fact that she’s no longer the same person she once was.

Elsewhere in the Harper’s Bazaar interview, she reflected on the decision to release the song. “I actually listened to this song yesterday and I was wondering: did I really need to release it? It was one of those things that maybe now that I’m a little more private, I would have it kept it private, but I’m glad I shared it,” she said.

“It feels like such a personal song that it’s hard for people to relate to it,” Cyrus added of “Used to Be Young,” which reached No. 8 on the chart. Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the US Adult Pop Airplay chart. Clearly some listeners are related!

The Grammy winner also revealed to Harper’s Bazaar that she plans to release a visual album tentatively titled Something beautiful. “He was inspired by Pink Floyd‘s The Wallshe said, reflecting on her first viewing of the surreal 1982 film.

Cyrus’ idea for the next album, she told the outlet, “was to make The Wallbut with a better wardrobe, more glamorous and filled with pop culture.”

She also took inspiration from one of her favorite horror films, this one from 2018. Mandy featuring Nicolas Cage. “I wanted to play Nicolas Cage,” she said. “I love that it’s a romantic revenge story. Romance and revenge: these are some of the greatest tragedies. These will interest me forever and always.
