Court hearing to determine how much Providence must pay school district

A court hearing is scheduled for Wednesday morning to determine how much Providence must pay the state-run Providence Public School District.

NBC 10 spoke exclusively with Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee on Tuesday. McKee said he hoped an agreement would be reached before the hearing.

“Our office is involved in negotiations, so I’m glad discussions are underway, and I expect an agreement to be reached before we get to court,” Governor McKee said.

The school district said it has been underpaid by the city since the state takeover.

Mayor Brett Smiley said the district mismanaged funds.

The city could have to pay between $10 million and $85 million.

The district threatened to cut sports, bus passes and jobs if it didn’t get more funding.

The city is under a hiring freeze and has suspended all discretionary spending because of the recent court ruling that it will have to give the district more money.

Providence residents will likely see a tax increase and other reductions depending on the dollar amount expected to be determined in court Wednesday.

As of 5 a.m. Wednesday, no settlement had been announced.
