Teenager accused of murdering ‘most selfless person’ refused to appear at first court hearing

A teenager accused of murdering a 27-year-old woman at a train station has refused to attend his first hearing at Crown Court.

Deng Chol Majek, 18, is accused of murdering Rhiannon Skye Whyte, who was stabbed at Bescot Stadium in Walsall, West Midlandslast month.

Ms Whyte died in hospital surrounded by his family three days after being attacked on the evening of October 20.

Her family described her as “the most beloved daughter, compassionate sister, loving aunt, gracious granddaughter, beautiful niece, wonderful cousin and devoted friend” in a statement released by police at the time. of his death.

Chol Majek was due to make his plea during an appearance at Wolverhampton Crown Court via video link from HMP Manchester today, but he refused to attend the hearing.

Charlie Crinion, defending the South Sudanese man, said the teenager refused to speak to him through an interpreter before the hearing because he did not know who he was.

Judge Michael Chambers KC said he would continue the case as if the accused contested the charges.

The prosecution said the trial, which could take place in April, was expected to last between five and seven days.

The judge told Mr Crinion it was important he had a “good conference” with his client and that Chol Majek had “full confidence” in his representation.

The next hearing is set for December 13.

Ms Whyte’s family said her death was a “devastating loss”, describing her as “the most selfless person”.

The statement added: “You were brave, quirky, funny and always there for anyone who needed it. There isn’t enough paper in the world to even begin to write a tribute for you, but no one doesn’t deserve it anymore.

“The strange thing about this devastating loss is that we now have to live without you, but how? If your short life can teach us anything, it’s to cherish every moment with those you love, because tomorrow won’t It’s never guaranteed.
