TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Tallahassee Fire Department Extrication Team recently competed 4,224 miles from the capital during the World Rescue Organization World Championships in Portugal.

The team is trained to safely remove people from cars after an accident – which often requires hydraulic tools like the ‘jaws of life’.

Instant TFD Extrication Team Commander Jake Roberts said the group had been competing together for two years and this year they qualified for the world championships.

“Coming 6th, we are happy. I think it’s respectable. We hope to be able to go back and we hope to bring a championship back to Tallahassee,” Roberts said. “In the future, we will try to improve and aim for first place.”

The championships implemented intense and realistic car crash simulations for teams to respond to, with volunteers acting as victims in a wreck. Teams are judged on their response in terms of time, technical skills, patient care and other criteria.

Roberts said the skills learned through this competition will benefit the entire department.

“Thanks to hours and hours of training and competition, we have improved considerably every day, and we bring these experiences back to corporate training, we do continuing training, we train new recruits,” he said. declared. said.
