A local court sentenced Dhanas resident Shyam Sunder to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined him Rs 1 lakh after convicting him in a case under the Narcotics and Substances Act psychotropic drugs (NDPS).

The police arrested the accused on April 15, 2019 from the area near Sector 53, Chandigarh, with 25 injections of Buprenorphine, 2 ml each, and 11 injections of Avil, 10 ml each, without any valid license or permit.

After investigation, the police presented a charge sheet against the accused in court and charges were framed to which the accused pleaded not guilty and demanded trial. The accused’s lawyer argued that he had been falsely implicated in the case and had not committed any offence. He said Section 50 of the NDPS Act was not being followed as no proper procedure was adopted by the police. The prosecutor argued that the accused had failed to prove that he had a permit to possess psychotropic substances, which are of a commercial nature.
