Justin Sun – the founder of the cryptocurrency company Tron said it had successfully acquired Maurizio CattelánThe iconic work of – a banana for $6 million (around Rs 52.4 crore). Speaking to microblogging site X (formerly Twitter), Sun said that “it’s not just a work of art; it represents a cultural phenomenon that bridges the worlds of art, memes, and the cryptocurrency community.”

The banana-shaped artwork was sold at an auction at Sotheby’s in New York on November 20. Called “Comedian,” the artwork depicts a banana stuck to a wall with masking tape. Named “the most expensive fruit in the world” by the New York Times, it has sparked widespread debate in the art world, with some calling it a clever satirical statement. Others dismiss it as a reflection of the “madness” of artists, collectors, dealers and critics.
In his message, Sun states that in the coming days he will “personally eat the banana as part of this unique artistic experience, honoring its place in both art history and popular culture.”
