New High Court bid for Kettering building demolition

A new application has been submitted for the immediate demolition of a six-storey city center building still under construction.

The building, located in Job’s Yard, Kettering, Northamptonshire, was subject to a demolition order last year, following a three-day trial at the High Court in Birmingham.

Developer Michigan Construction Limited (MCL) was told it would be tasked with demolishing the building by spring 2024, but no progress has been made since then, the council said.

THE Local democracy information service said MCL did not respond to a request for comment.

North Northamptonshire Council (NNC) claimed MCL refused to allow council officials and agents access to the building to carry out a pre-demolition inspection.

A cordon has been in place around the building since June 2022 to protect the public, and NNC said it would remain in place until demolition is complete.

The council said the new High Court order would seek to progress the demolition without obstruction from the site owner, but the council did not provide an expected time frame for a hearing to be held.

NNC previously said demolition could take up to 12 weeks, once preliminary assessments have been completed.
