Biden apologizes for US-run boarding schools that abused, killed indigenous children

In Arizona, President Biden issued a formal apology to government-run Native American boarding schools that separated Native families and sought to exterminate Native cultures. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, the first-ever Native American cabinet secretary, spoke at the event at Gila Crossing Community School.

Interior Secretary Deb Haaland: “Tens of thousands of Native children as young as 4 years old were taken from their families and communities and forced into boarding schools run by the U.S. government and religious institutions. These federal Indian residential schools had an impact on every Native person I know. Some are survivors. Some are descendants. But we all carry the trauma caused by these policies and these places.

Biden’s speech was briefly interrupted by an indigenous protester who shouted, “How can you apologize for genocide when you are committing genocide in Palestine?” We’ll talk more about this later in the show with Nick Tilsen, founder of the indigenous organizing group. NDN Collective.
