In 2025, women will be automatically invited to breast cancer screening from the age of 50

Health chiefs say improvements are being made to the breast cancer screening program in Jersey.

Women who are not registered for breast cancer screening will now automatically be invited for an examination at the age of 50.

The project was made possible thanks to a £255,000 mammogram machine paid for by the John Clive Le Seelleur Trust and funding from the Jersey Cancer Relief charity.

The device, at the Enid Quenault Health and Wellness Center, will be used for routine screenings.

Previously, women had to register for breast cancer screening at the age of 50. However, in 2025, women will be automatically invited for breast cancer screening in their 50th year, with the option to opt out if they wish.

The new machine will also be available if the General Hospital’s mammography machine, used for symptomatic patients, requires repair.

“Vital to save lives”

Assistant Minister for Health and Social Services, Andy Howell MP, said: “I am delighted to announce changes to our breast cancer screening program which will improve both women’s access to care and their experience as a patient.

“I would like to thank Jersey Cancer Relief and the John Clive Le Seelleur Trust for their incredible support, which means we can ensure that all women are invited to be screened for breast cancer when they become eligible. Early detection is essential to save lives.”

In addition, a new mammography machine to replace the current machine at the General Hospital, funded by HCS, is expected to be installed in the first quarter of next year.
