Trump and Harris enter final full week of campaigning

New York is unlikely to vote for Trump, but that’s not why he went to Madison Square Garden – 11:14 a.m.

By Sam Brodey, Globe Staff

For Trump, it was a towering visual: thousands of supporters filling an iconic arena just days before the presidential election.

The fact that only a few of these die-hard supporters at Madison Square Garden could actually vote meaningfully for Trump was not unimportant. That was the goal.

“This is where Republicans aren’t supposed to come,” yelled former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who was ordered Tuesday by a judge to sign over his Manhattan penthouse and other assets to two election officials from Georgia that he defamed in 2020. “Which is why Donald Trump came here!”

This was not the first time during this campaign that such a boastful statement could be made. In a race characterized by fierce competition for a handful of battleground states, Trump has consistently ignored political logic by campaigning in states like New York, California and Colorado, all of which Harris is expected to win handily .

American voters concerned about post-election violence and efforts to overturn results: AP-NORC poll — 10:02 a.m.

By Associated Press

American voters are approaching the presidential election with deep unease about what could ensue, including the potential for political violence, attempts to overturn the election results and its broader implications for democracy, according to a new survey.

The findings of the survey, conducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, speak to lingering concerns about the fragility of the world’s oldest democracy, nearly four years after former President Donald Trump’s refusal Trump’s acceptance of the 2020 election results inspired a crowd. of his supporters to storm the U.S. Capitol in a violent attempt to stop the peaceful transfer of power.

About four in ten registered voters say they are “extremely” or “very” concerned about violent attempts to overturn the results after the November election. A similar share is concerned about legal efforts to achieve this. And about one in three voters say they are “extremely” or “very” concerned about attempts by local or state election officials to prevent results from being finalized.

Harris says she would take a cognitive test if asked — 9:13 a.m.

By Associated Press

As Trump continues to attack Harris with deeply personal insults, he also suggested she take a cognitive test.

In an interview with CBS News, Harris responded “of course” when asked if she would take such a test.

“I would challenge him to take the same one,” Harris said. “I think he’s actually becoming more unstable and unhinged and has resorted to name-calling because he actually has no plan for the American people.”

It’s the same line Trump used when Biden was still running for president as questions swirled about the 81-year-old’s age and mental acuity after his disastrous debate performance in June.

Trump is 78 years old and is now the oldest candidate to run for office.

Six questions to watch as the campaign enters its final full week — 8:37 a.m.

By Associated Press

What happens in the coming days will be decisive in deciding the winner. Here are some things we monitor:

1. Will the wars in the Middle East change the focus?

It remains unclear how Iran would respond to Israel’s unusually public airstrikes on Iran on Friday. The answer could determine whether the region slides further toward all-out war or remains stable at an already devastating and destabilizing level of violence.

2. Will Harris’ closing message exploit Democrats’ anxiety?

Harris will try to ease Democrats’ anxiety on Tuesday when she delivers her “closing argument” at the Ellipse, the same location near the White House where Trump spoke on January 6, 2021, shortly before his supporters attack the Capitol.

3. Can Trump stay true to his message (relatively speaking)?

And with eight days until Election Day, history suggests that Trump is all but guaranteed to say or do something else controversial down the stretch. The only question is whether it will succeed.

4. Where will they go?

How candidates’ travel schedules evolve will tell us a lot about which battlegrounds will matter most on Election Day.

5. Will the wave of early voting continue?

More than 41 million votes have already been cast in these nationwide elections. Democrats generally have an advantage in early voting, but so far, at least, Republicans are participating in much higher turnout than in the past.

6. To what extent will Trump work to undermine the election results?

History may one day decide that the most significant thing Trump said in the final days of the 2024 election is the one many voters barely notice: his persistent warnings that this election is rigged against him .
