Lukas Märtens and Isabel Gose prepare for short course Worlds as Germany announces squad of 19

Lucas Martens And Isabelle Gosé will head to the short course world championships in Budapest next month to cap off a year in which they won Olympic gold and bronze respectively.

The duo is part of a group of 19 people Germany team, made up of six women and 13 men, for the competition which will take place from December 10 to 15 at the Duna Arena.

Martens became the first German to win Olympic gold in the pool since 1988 when he won the 400 freestyle in Paris, 36 years later Michael Gross of West Germany won the 200m butterfly and Uwe Dassler from East Germany also won the event by eight lengths.






This followed his bronze behind Kim Woo-Min from South Korea and Australia Elie Winnington at the World Championships in Doha.

Gose earned 800 money and bronze in the 400 and 1500 in Doha before winning bronze in the longest pool race in Paris, moving away Simona Quadarella to set a German record of 15:41.16.

Will also compete Florian Wellbrockwhich Friday won the World Cup final in Saudi Arabia in what was his first appearance since his eighth place in open water in Paris.

The 27-year-old, who set the 1500 WR in 14:06.88 on the way to gold at the 2021 Short Course World Championships in Abu Dhabi, told World Aquatics: “It was so important to race here, especially after my disappointing Olympics and, of course, I’m really excited to race short course in December.”

Melvin Imoudu And Lucas Matzerath – respectively fourth and fifth in the 100m breaststroke in Paris – are also selected alongside Nina Sandrine Jazy And Marius Kusch.

The German team left the 2022 edition in Melbourne with two bronze medals thanks to Anna Elendt (100m breaststroke) and Kusch (100m butterfly).

“We have a powerful team of seasoned and younger swimmers just starting out and we still have a lot to look forward to,” the athletic director said. Christian Hansmann.
