Grandma’s 20 Nostalgic Desserts That Deserve a Return

I don’t want to brag, but my grandmother had excellent taste. And by that I mean she had excellent taste in matters dessertsOf course. Whether it’s a big one Danish giant fruit for weekend breakfasts or huge boxes of cookies, her house was always stocked with the best, most nostalgic treats. So I thought, why not recreate all these retro and fun elements desserts to keep the tradition alive? No matter what type of grandma you have, I firmly believe that one of these nostalgic grandma-approved desserts will take you right back to her house.

For many, being able to help grandma mix and cook cookies is a highlight of any visit. In this case, I think it’s high time to bring back some of the more kitschy and underappreciated flavors, like mint chocolate chip cookies, black and white cookiesAnd ginger cookies. Put all those cookies in a box for your grandma and you’ll be on your way to becoming grandchild #1, guaranteed.

What if your grandmother was more of a maximalist? Try your hand at flashier recipes, like a Baked Alaska, pineapple upside down cakeor our layer banana pudding. Speaking of pudding, if your grandma always has packets of Jell-O lying around, she’ll return this adorably delicious dessert. Jell-O Cake. There really are all kinds of varieties of grandmothers, so maybe yours didn’t really like baking? Pssst: You don’t need a fancy ice cream maker to make ice at home, all you need is a plastic bag and 15 minutes! Add a different extract, add a little chocolate syrup or top with candy for the sundae of your dreams.

Bizcochitos

Although the style of these cookies varies a bit depending on where you are in New Mexico (it’s the state cookie!), they are generally made with lard or butter and cut into the shape of flower, star or moon. Anise seeds are crucial for that delicate floral licorice flavor, as is a sprinkling of cinnamon-sugar for more softness.

Maybe your grandmother didn’t like baking, in which case she probably stocked up on a lot of zebra cakes for visits, and we don’t blame her. Vanilla Cakes are sandwiched with a marshmallow butter cream in the middle and dipped in white chocolate, but we can’t forget the iconic zebra stripes on top. These are surprisingly easier to make than they seem, and to the extent that copy recipes come on, this one is pretty close to the original.
