UMass Football cancels, then restarts Senior Day festivities amid backlash

It’s been an interesting week for the UMass Minutemen football team, to say the least.

On Monday, they fired head coach Don Brown after a 6-28 stint with the team, and on Tuesday, his his wife took to social media to complain about the program’s lack of money – just a collective $36,000 for their student-athletes.

Thursday and Friday? No more drama.

In an article on X (formerly Twitter) On Thursday evening, senior tight end Dominick Mazotti wrote that apparently the University had decided to cancel the team’s Senior Day festivities scheduled for Nov. 30 against UConn.

“I know I’ve only been here a year, so maybe I don’t deserve a senior day here,” Mazotti wrote. “But for the department to take away honor from the people who gave their all to this great university is stupid. The guys have been here for years and they deserve to be recognized in front of UConn.”

He continued: “For further context, they decided there were too many people graduating, so they simply canceled each individual’s pre-game celebration. No player announcements will be made until the game against UConn.”

According to Brown musketa UMass athletics fan page, the team received the following message regarding the cancellation:

“UConn is our Senior Day. The athletic department has decided not to recognize players individually or have a traditional ceremony due to the number of players who complete their eligibility and graduate from the school. Instead of ceremony, the athletic department offers your families will have the opportunity to be on the field for pre-game warm-ups and a photographer will be available to take photos with you If you plan to have family members in attendance, send me a message by Text/email/teamwork who will be present so we can obtain passes for pre-game warm-ups Please pass this information along to your family members.

The university’s decision sparked significant backlash on social media from students, fans and members of the media, so much so that they turned away:

“We regret the lack of communication with our team regarding Senior Day activities planned for next Saturday,” the team wrote about. “To be clear, the Senior Day ceremony was NEVER canceled. Instead, we planned to modify the pre-game ceremony due to the large number of “seniors” (54 total) this year We will meet with this group today to further discuss the logistics of Senior Day and finalize a plan that meets everyone’s desired outcomes.

Mazotti has since confirmed this senior day is, in fact, back for the Minutemen:

“Senior Day is back!” he wrote. “Thank you everyone for the support we have received for the team. I hope to see some of you at our senior day next weekend, but for now we will play Georgia tomorrow.”

UMass travels to Athens, Ga., on Saturday to take on the No. 8 Bulldogs. They will then return home for a appropriate Senior Day at McGuirk Stadium in Amherst against the UConn Huskies.
