3 IUT students die after electrification of picnic bus in Gazipur

All the deceased were students in the Mechanical Engineering department of the IUT.

Three Islamic University of Technology (IUT) students died of electrocution and around 60 others were injured after a bus taking them to a picnic came into contact with an exposed overhead electrical wire in Sreepur from Gazipur today (November 23) at 10:30 am.

The deceased are Mozammel Hossain Naim, 24, Mostakim Rahman Mahin, 22, and Jobayer Alam Sakib, 22.

All of them were rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.

All the deceased were students of the mechanical engineering department of IUT, confirmed Mymensingh Medical College Hospital deputy director Jakiul Islam.

However, detailed information about them could not be known immediately.

“The three were taken to hospital dead. We could not confirm the number of injured. I am going to the emergency room,” Jakiul said.

According to sources, a total of 460 students of the mechanical engineering department of IUT hired five double-decker buses and were traveling to Matir Maya Eco Resort in Uttar Pilaid village under Telihati union of Sreepur upazila of Gazipur.

The accident occurred when one of the buses hit an electric wire of Palli Bidyut while crossing a rural road in Udaikhali village, sources said.

Afsar Uddin, a local resident, said, “The fifth bus (Dhaka Metro B-157038) hit an 11,000-volt electric wire while passing through the Udaikhali Bazar area. Two students died instantly, while others suffered burns from the electrocution. “

Shamim Ahmed, another eyewitness, said: “The students started screaming when smoke started coming from one of the buses due to the electrocution. Those who were in contact with the steel pole or seats were injured, while three died.

He said the two men had to be separated using bamboo sticks, but they did not survive.

When contacted, deputy general manager of Mymensingh Palli Bidyut Samity-2 Khondker Mahmdul Hasan said, “The electric wire had a voltage of 11,000 volts. The bus became electrified when he tried to let another bus pass him and leaned too close to the wire.
