A decision on Friday’s request will not be made until next week, with prosecutors warning of his “concerted efforts” behind bars to disrupt the case.

U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian said he would rule quickly on Combs’ request for bail after the defense and prosecution filed letters at noon Monday, fleshing out some of the arguments they made during of a two-hour hearing in Manhattan federal court.

Combs’ lawyers proposed having him await trial under 24-hour surveillance at his mansion on an island near Miami Beach or — after the judge mocked the location — in an Upper East Side apartment from Manhattan.

Their $50m (£39.9m) bail proposal, secured by his Florida home, essentially amounts to keeping Combs under house arrest rather than in custody at Brooklyn’s troubled federal prison, where he has been detained for 67 days since his arrest in September.

As part of their plan, Combs’ lawyers said he would be subject to near-total restrictions on his ability to see or contact anyone but them.

But prosecutors argued that no bail conditions can mitigate the “risk of obstruction and danger to others.”

Combs routinely flouted prison rules while locked up at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, prosecutors said, accusing him of trying to interfere with witnesses and taint the jury pool.

Defense attorney Anthony Ricco countered that the prosecution’s description of Combs as “a lawless person who doesn’t follow instructions” or “an out-of-control individual who needs to be detained” is inaccurate.

Another lawyer for Combs, Teny Geragos, added that given the strict release conditions proposed, “it would be impossible for him not to follow the rules.”

Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to charges that he coerced and abused women for years with the help of a network of associates and employees, while silencing victims through blackmail and violence, including kidnappings, arson and physical beatings.

His trial is scheduled to begin May 5.

Two other judges previously concluded that the Bad Boy Records founder would pose a danger to the community if released. An appeals court judge last month denied Combs’ immediate release while a three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals weighs his request for bail.

Friday’s hearing was the second time Combs appeared in court this week.

On Tuesday, a judge blocked prosecutors from using documents seized from his cell as evidence during a prison-wide search for contraband and weapons.

As he entered through a side door, Combs greeted loved ones, including his mother and several of his children, in the courtroom gallery, touching his hand to his heart and blowing kisses.

Combs was not handcuffed or shackled and wore a beige prison uniform, occasionally removing a pair of reading glasses from his pocket while reading the papers in front of him.

Prosecutors say that while incarcerated, the I’ll Be Missing You singer orchestrated social media campaigns aimed at influencing potential jurors.

They allege he also attempted to release documents he believed could help his case, and that he contacted potential witnesses through third parties.
