Archaeologists have discovered the world’s oldest alphabetical writing in a tomb in northern Syria.

According to Independent, Researchers from Johns Hopkins University in the United States have discovered finger-length clay cylinders with the oldest known alphabetical writing dating to around 2400 BC.

Scientists believed that this form of writing could have revolutionized language by making it accessible to ordinary people.

The archaeologist who discovered the clay cylinder, Glenn Schwartz, said: “Alphabetical writing changed the way people lived, how they thought, how they communicated… And this new discovery shows that people were experimenting with new communication technologies much earlier and earlier. a different place than we had previously imagined.

Dr. Schwartz and his team studied how ancient cities developed in the Middle East, particularly in Syria. The team has been participating for 16 years in the archaeological excavations of Tell Umm-el Marra, one of the first medium-sized ancient urban centers to appear in western Syria.

The results of the study on the origin and evolution of alphabets were presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Overseas Research.

Additionally, archaeologists have already discovered ancient tombs at this site dating back to the Early Bronze Age, between 3,500 and 2,000 BC. One of the tombs was discovered with six bones, precious jewelry, entire pots, cooking utensils and even a spearhead.
