The results of the Assembly bypolls in three seats in Kerala were in line with the expectations of the three major political fronts in the state.

In Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency, AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi won her maiden elections handily with a massive margin of 4,10,931 votes.

In Palakkad Assembly constituency, although touted as a thrilling triangular fight, state Youth Congress president Rahul Mamkoothathil ultimately won by 18,840 votes.

In Chelakkara Assembly constituency, as expected, the CPI-M retained its seat when former UR lawmaker Pradeep won with a margin of 12,201 votes.

While the Congress and CPI-M retained their seats, the BJP did not win any seats. He nevertheless managed to retain his second place in Palakkad, although with around 10,000 votes less.

Reacting to her expected victory, Priyanka Gandhi took to social media and wrote, “My dearest sisters and brothers of Wayanad, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the trust reposed in me by you. I will make sure that over time you truly feel that this victory was your victory and that the person you chose to represent you understands your hopes and dreams and fights for you as one of your own.

“I can’t wait to be your voice in Parliament!” Thank you for giving me this honor and even more for the immense love you have given me.”

“My UDF colleagues, leaders from across Kerala, workers, volunteers and my office colleagues who have worked incredibly hard in this campaign, thank you for your support, for tolerating my 12 hours a day (no food, no rest ) car rides, and for fighting like true soldiers for the ideals we all believe in.

“To my mother, Robert and my two jewels – Raihan and Miraya, no gratitude is ever enough for the love and courage you give me. And to my brother Rahul, you are the bravest of all…thank you for showing me the way and always supporting me,” Priyanka wrote.

State Congress president and Kannur Lok Sabha member K. Sudhakaran said the people of Kerala had broken the back of the BJP and voted against the governance of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

“This is a vote against Vijayan like in Palakkad, see the huge vote margin for Rahul Mamkoothathil and the reduced victory margin for the CPI-M in Chelakkara,” Sudhakaran said.

However, left-wing in-charge of the CPI-M-led ruling party TP Ramakrishnan said the results clearly show that the Left government’s governance is intact.

“We retained the Chelakkara seat and managed to get more votes in Palakkad and bring down the votes of the BJP (which came second but with around 10,000 votes less compared to the 2021 Assembly polls) . In Palakkad, the Congress got support from community elements. It cannot be said clearly whether all the Left votes in Wayanad have been polled,” Ramakrishnan said.
