Missing veteran found dead in Manitowoc County

MANITOWOC, Wis. (WBAY) – A missing Manitowoc veteran was found dead Saturday, four days after a green alert was issued for him.

In a news release issued Saturday, the Manitowoc Police Department said Jason Neumann was found dead about two miles north of the village of Cleveland on Lake Michigan. The investigation currently shows no indication of foul play, according to police.

The investigation into Neumann’s death is being conducted by the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office and the Manitowoc County Coroner. No further information has been released.

PREVIOUS: A green alert was issued Wednesday for Jason Neumann, 43, a missing veteran from Manitowoc.

He was last seen Monday and his vehicle was discovered the next day in a shallow part of Lake Michigan near the village of Cleveland.

Jason is described as white, 5’8 tall, 220 pounds, with blue eyes and blonde hair cut short on the sides and long on top. He has a tattoo of the Army AIRBORNE symbol on one of his arms.

Jason was one of 57 veterans who traveled on the Freedom to Liberty: A Mission of Healing Honor Flight. Veteran Mary Simonis was also on the trip, and she and Jason became fast friends.

“He was one of the veterans that you could see, he was a little more reserved and kind of stood on the periphery, and I didn’t, so we clicked really well, you know, we had some really good adventures ” said Mary.

Action 2 News traveled to New York for the inaugural flight, capturing Mary and Jason’s time together in the Big Apple. They visited places like the 9/11 Museum and were always next to each other.

Mary says the trip had a common theme. Although they all served in different branches of the military, they all had one thing in common: protecting the United States.

“Having another veteran who understands the depth of that pride and that feeling and everything that it was, it was like we had known each other for years,” Mary said.

Jason’s brother Erik informed Mary via social media of Jason’s disappearance. She says it warms her heart to see the veteran community sharing messages in hopes that Jason returns home safe.

Jason’s brother sent Action 2 News a statement saying, “Jason, we love you and miss you. If you are here and able to read this, go home. Your family wants you to come home.

Mary also reminded the public to check on their loved ones.

“Reach out to those you love and say hello, ask them how they are, and find a way to communicate. Find a way to meet, hug and do something together,” Mary said.

Any information on Jason’s whereabouts should be reported to the Manitowoc Police Department at (920) 686-6500. If you or a loved one are experiencing difficulty, please call or text 988 for help.
