SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Two community credit unions are hoping to become one.

Green Mountain Credit Union and Opportunities Credit Union announced plans to merge Saturday.

Leaders say the combined organization would have about $165 million in assets to improve its ability to meet the needs of members across Vermont.

The combined organization would continue to serve more than 10,000 members in Burlington, South Burlington, Winooski, Berlin and Rutland.

The merger must be approved by state and federal regulators, as well as members of both credit unions, to be finalized.

Officials say they hope to close in 2025.
