mDL check moving from theoretical to practical questions

An opportunity presents itself for relying parties to onboard users more easily and safely through mobile driving licenses (mDL). But as discussed during “ Verifying CA’s mDLs and Learnings from the First mDL Hackathon» During Trinsic and Mitek’s webinar, uncertainty over availability and interoperability remains a stumbling block for many.

Louisiana mobile wallet is about to launch on the Trinsic network, Trinsic co-founder and CPO Michael Boyd said during the presentation.

Trinsic has eight states poised to launch mDLs in 2025; Illinois, Montana, Tennessee, New Jersey, North Dakota, Wyoming, North Carolina and West Virginia.

Developer APIs implemented by Apple and Google for digital credentials in their wallets have prompted states with existing legislation to take action, and Boyd suggests that continued advancements in the ecosystem, such as ISO/IEC 18013-7 standard for remote verification, will spur further launches and adoptions.

Boyd looked at the 18013 family of standards and proximity checks through server-side or peer-to-peer exchanges.

At least for the remote verification specification, Boyd says, “These specifications are extremely flexible. But that means all of these wallets tend to have a slightly different flavor. And this is where Trinsic’s universal API for all of these wallets has been a huge advantage for people trying to do POCs and run pilots.

Mitek Ali Nazem, senior client partner, says the relying parties his company serves are looking to use mDLs to facilitate the customer experience, while reducing fraud, like most digital identity technologies.

Nazem described an implementation of a reusable digital identity for peer-to-peer car rental platform Turo. The company wanted to improve the user experience, security and privacy protection of its digital user onboarding and authentication processes for car pick-up and drop-off.

After entering some basic information, the user performs biometric and selfie activity verification on the server side. Nazem then demonstrated creating a password linked to his account and adding his California mDL as an identifier for interactions with the relying party – Turo in this case. Turo receives the information it needs and approves the completion of the onboarding process.

The technology works, but Boyd says one of the challenges many in the mDL ecosystem face is uncertainty over “what will go live, where and when.”

Relying Parties may obtain information about what information they may find about individuals in a given jurisdiction from Trinsic, which also manages personally identifiable information and supports regulatory compliance. The company just completed a penetration test, according to Boyd, and is being audited for SOC 2 Type II certification. Trinsic users can store information outside of their wallet without giving up control or risking reduced security, he says.

In addition to integrating the digital identities of providers in its network, Trinsic also provides basic document scanning functionality.

Boyd reviewed options for testing and populating credentials, which include a headshot for biometric identity verification.

This brings up a sticky point that arose during the Q&A portion of the webinar. Some legislation currently treats the relying party as the processor, Boyd explains, complicating government requirements to know in each case which entity is verifying the digital identity it has issued. This adds an additional barrier to adoption that he says can be avoided through greater clarity on how the parties should interact.

The path to production runs through California

The path to production launches is paved both by online demos like those contained in the webinar and by the participation of developer teams at events like the California DMV’s. use case competition. Trinsic and Mitek were among the participants. Others included Time, Ping Identity, Incode And Claim ID.

There are now 780,000 people in California participating in that state’s program. mDL driverand a list of seven winners was announced in the hackathon organized by DMV for digital identification applications.

A way for nonprofits to integrate mDLs to reach and enroll underserved community members in social benefit programs by Entity Team won the “Most Convincing and Most Socially Impactful” award. A Cisco team won the “Most Promising” award for an application of mDL as the root digital identity for passwordless authentication. Block developers won “Best Privacy and Security Design” for an in-person age verification app for merchants using Square, and a team from U.S. Bank won “Most scalable” for an in-person identity verification implementation for bank branches to perform high-volume operations. -risky operations.

The UltraPass team won the “Best User Experience” award for an mDL combined with encrypted biometrics to streamline account creation, while Matrin collaboration with Samsung, Treez and Nuvei, won “Best Presentation” for an application to verify identity and age for cannabis sales and deliveries.

The “Best Independent Submission” came from the UFI team, which integrated California mDls into existing identity and access management (IAM) systems.

The hackathon was co-organized by the OpenID Foundation, and a second was announced on Nov. 1 in Sacramento to focus on public sector applications.

“We were impressed by the innovative solutions presented by the teams. Their efforts highlight the potential of the mDL to enable Californians to verify their identity in a secure and privacy-friendly manner,” said DMV Director Steve Gordon. “These use cases demonstrate how mDL technology can impact both the private and public sectors for the benefit of their customers.”
