Karachi cracks down on public waste with heavy fines

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has launched a stringent campaign against public waste, with fines of up to Rs 50,000 and imprisonment of up to three years for violators.

To combat the growing problem of waste disposal on streets and footpaths, the KMC has issued advisories to several restaurants and businesses in the city.

The notices, issued under the Sindh Local Government Act, highlight the illegal practice of dumping waste in public spaces.

A KMC spokesperson stressed that the authorities are committed to taking strict action against individuals and companies found guilty of violating cleanliness laws. Violators face fines or imprisonment as the municipal body seeks to enforce the city’s environmental standards.

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab confirmed that municipal inspectors would enforce the law to ensure compliance. “We are committed to maintaining cleanliness in the city and will not hesitate to take necessary action against violators,” he said.

He also mentioned that three hotels have already received notices for dumping waste on sidewalks and in public spaces. These companies were given three days to remedy the problem or face legal consequences.
