Colorado dentist James Craig, accused of poisoning his wife with a protein shake, tried to enlist an ex-convict in prison

Colorado dentist charged with poisoning his wife’s protein shakes attempted to rig his murder trial by having a fellow inmate plant evidence that would make it appear the woman’s death was a suicide, according to reports.

Dr. James Craig wrote a letter from prison to an ex-convict trying to persuade the ex-convict to commit perjury by placing fake suicide notes in his family home, according to Aurora police. according to the Denver Gazette.

Craig would write these fake notes from prison and provide them to the man who had recently been released, according to this letter, this outlet reported.

The alleged murderer explained how his potential accomplice would also have to find attractive women who would be willing to lie in court and say they had an affair with Craig, cops told the court.

These adventures would then be supposed to encourage Angela to commit suicide out of spite for her unfaithful husband.

Craig offered his fellow inmate’s mother free dental care in exchange for the favor, reports the Denver Gazette.

The letter was never received – having been returned to sender after the dentist forgot to include his would-be accomplice’s apartment number in the address line, according to this outlet.

A prison staff technician then received, opened and read the letter, police told the court.

Defense attorney Harvey Steinberg abruptly withdrew from the case earlier this week before jury selection.

He cited two rules of professional conduct, saying his client was trying to get the lawyer to commit fraud or other criminal acts, according to the Denver Post.

The judge delayed the trial to accommodate this abrupt change.

Dr. Craig is due back in court on December 16 where he is expected to present a new lawyer, according to the Denver Post.

Angela Craig, 43, died on March 18, 2023 from fatal doses of cyanide and tetrahydrozoline, a decongestant found in over-the-counter eye drops.

Prosecutors say Craig researched online how to poison someone and purchased arsenic and cyanide in the days before Angela’s death.

These searches, which were allegedly carried out on a public computer, included: “how many grams of pure arsenic would kill a human”, “is arsenic detectable at autopsy”, “top 5 undetectable poisons that do not show no signs of foul play,” “how to make poison,” and “The 10 Deadliest Plants (They Can Kill You),” according to prosecutors.

Craig conducted this research and concocted his murderous plan shortly after beginning an extramarital affair, prosecutors say.

The dentist faces charges of first-degree murder, tampering with evidence, first-degree murder and solicitation of perjury stemming from his conspiratorial letter.
