Billy Napier doesn’t even have the hottest seat in Florida, according to bettors

I’m not a game player, but it makes sense. Las Vegas has some thoughts on which Power Four head coaches are sitting in the hottest seats heading into November. Entering Week 10, only three Group of Five head coaches have been fired this season, with Rice’s Mike Bloomgren being the latest. There are five openings, with Fresno State and Utah State both being run by interims.

Whenever I do spot watches, I rarely like to put the Group of Five coaches in the hot seat. Yes, they won’t all make it, but I prefer to celebrate this level of FBS. college football than to make fun of it. That said, I like to put pressure on underperforming Power Four head coaches. Unfortunately for some, I think it’s way too premature to have Florida’s Billy Napier in the hot seat.

Las Vegas thinks differently. Here are the Power Four head coaches with the best chance of being fired.

Of those eight head coaches, I would only put Florida State’s Mike Norvell, Purdue’s Ryan Walters, Auburn’s Hugh Freeze and North Carolina’s Mack Brown in the hot seat. In time, Napier, Arkansas’ Sam Pittman, Baylor’s Dave Aranda and Cal’s Justin Wilcox may eventually earn their pink slips, but I would fire several Power Four head coaches before them, including unlisted Gus Malzahn. ‘UCF…

Norvell’s seat is hotter in Florida than Napier’s. I would say Malzahn should feel it too.

Overall, I would say that the four Power Four schools located in the state of Florida are not led by elite head coaches. I’m going to be kind to Mario Cristobal here, but Miami could run itself. Norvell is probably the best of the four, but Florida State is the worst sack of shit in the Power Four. They were a top 10 team to start the season. Last year’s undefeated ACC champion is now 1-7.

Buyouts be damned, Norvell isn’t helping his team win right now or in the future on the recruiting trail. As for Malzahn, the UCF Knights are 3-5 and riding a five-game losing streak. His outdated, rushed offensive philosophy has aged like Keith Richards. While BYU and Cincinnati have a much easier transition from the Group of Five to the Big 12, the Gus Bus may have to go soon.

As for Napier, what else could he have done this season? Florida is 4-3 with losses to serious playoff contenders in Miami, Texas A&M and Tennessee. If Florida had beaten Tennessee in overtime a few weeks ago, we could make a case for the Gators having a real chance to upset Georgia in the Cocktail Party. And that’s precisely why everyone is lining up to kick Napier out of Gainesville.

Florida’s last five games have been brutally bad. The Gators face Georgia in Jacksonville, Texas in Austin, LSU in Gainesville, Ole Miss in Gainesville and Florida State in Tallahassee to finish the regular season. If Florida loses to Florida State to end the year on a five-game skid, maybe Napier will be eliminated after a 4-8 record? If the Gators steal one of their first four games to finish 6-6, he could stay.

As of right now, Florida State and UCF have been the most disappointing teams in Florida this season.
