US anti-China disinformation likely to continue under Trump, analysts say

In the United States, a bipartisan effort to unite both sides of politics against foreign propaganda has backfired, with critics accusing it of censoring Americans, especially those on the right.

As the State Department’s little-known arm could close its doors next month before the president’s election Donald Trump Upon his return to the White House, analysts predict that U.S. information warfare policy is unlikely to change course.
THE Global Engagement Center (GEC) was created in 2016 under former President Barack Obama to combat “state and non-state propaganda and disinformation efforts” targeting the United States and its allies.

The GEC’s mission was significantly broader than that of its predecessor, the Counterterrorism Strategic Communications Center, which focused solely on counterterrorism.

Unless Congress acts to save it, Obama’s legacy operation will end on December 23, when his seven-year term expires.

But the potential closure of the GEC does not mean the second Trump administration will lose sight of or control over alleged foreign propaganda, said Josef Mahoney, a professor of politics and international relations at East China Normal University in Shanghai.
