Angels linked to former MVP outfielder in free agency

MLB free agency iIt’s fast approaching, which means it’s time to release The Athletic’s annual ranking of the best free agents, complete with contract predictions and ideal roster fits.

Although the players officially enter free agency the day after the end of the World Series, they will have to wait five days after the last withdrawal to sign with a new team.

According to Jim Bowden, This year’s free agent class is led by Juan Soto, who is expected to land a massive contract, likely in the $550-$650 million range. The top of the market also has four elite starting pitchers: Corbin Burnes, Blake Snell, Max Fried and perhaps Roki Sasaki if the 23-year-old phenom becomes available.

For position players, the class includes power bats like first baseman Pete Alonso and right fielder Anthony Santander, as well as two-way talents like first baseman Christian Walker and third baseman Alex Bregman.

While all of these names are at the top of the list, the Los Angeles Angels have to look lower and for some reason, No. 14 Cody Bellinger seems like a good fit, according to Bowden.

Here’s what Bowden had to say about Bellinger:

“Bellinger did not get the long-term deal he was looking for last offseason and will likely, once again, have to accept a shorter-term deal with a higher average annual value if he opts out of his three-year contract The reason: it has reached 20 years or more only runs once every five years and its production varies considerably from year to year.

“Bellinger won an MVP, a Rookie of the Year, two Silver Slugger Awards, a Gold Glove Award and was an All-Star twice in his eight-year career. However, his slash line in the last three seasons has been a roller coaster ride, making it difficult for teams to gauge which version they would get in the years to come. Bellinger’s ability to play above-average defense at all three outfield positions and first base improves his market value. “

This list will evolve as the league approaches the start of free agency. Some players may remain with their team if they choose not to terminate their contract or if their club exercises options. Others may decide to retire. Additionally, more international players could enter the mix.

For this ranking, Bowden included any player likely to hit free agency in November, even if that outcome seems unlikely to some.
