Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United, Women’s Super League: Post-match reaction

Chelsea Women and Manchester United are the two remaining undefeated teams in England. Even though the Red Devils’ unbeaten run is not as impressive as ours, they have done a great job of putting themselves on par with their rivals and getting some good results in return, like their 1-1 draw at home against Arsenal with a late goal from Melvine Malard.

Against Chelsea, they would be very hard to beat. The Blues dominated the entire field in the first 15 minutes of the match and the opposition folded, but never broke despite the barrage of provisional passes made by the hosts after kick-off.

As is often the case, we needed a little magic from our offensive line to make things happen. That’s what Mayra Ramírez did when she broke through a group of United defenders, broke into the box and was fouled by the opposition goalkeeper.

Guro Reiten, who has been our top scorer this season thanks to her own scores from open play and opportunities like those created by Mayra, took the ball to the goal and did what she does best.

Chelsea clearly wanted more and they kept pushing forward, even though they didn’t create as many shooting chances as they should to score more goals. High winds at Kingsmeadow didn’t help as the Blues were clearly doing their best to avoid stupid goals past Hannah Hampton.

In the second half the wind problems were even worse and United wanted to make the most of it. But as the Red Devils began to tire from all the rush work they were doing coming back from the tunnels, the Blues endured and began to see some space as they pushed their lines higher up the pitch.

Chelsea could have scored a second goal on several occasions. But poor early decisions and good shot saves from Phallon Tullis-Joyce, plus the Blues shutting up shop and doing their best not to concede a late goal to United, meant the hosts had to settle for ‘a simple victory.

Carefree!

  • The closest we’ll get to a full starting lineup today, from Hannah Hampton starting between the pipes to Mayra Ramírez leading the offensive line.
  • I’m very happy that Mayra got the penalty, which was clear as day for everyone. As Hannah’s clash with a Manchester United player showed which left the former breathless for a few minutes, refereeing in Women’s Super League matches can vary widely.
  • The wind was the main opposition today.
  • Five points ahead of City in the standings.
  • Next up: Brighton at home in the WSL, when the team returns from the international break.
  • KTBFFH!
