Army officer charged over false grenade scare at Edinburgh airport | UK News

A senior army officer has been charged after allegedly carrying a decommissioned hand grenade through Scotland’s busiest airport.

Lieutenant Colonel Hugo Clark is accused of passing through security with a deactivated explosive, prompting a bomb squad to be called to Edinburgh Airport.

The grenade, a dummy used in training, was deemed “non-viable and posed no threat” after the alleged incident in October.

“On Wednesday October 16 at around 8.05am, police were called by Edinburgh Airport security after a decommissioned munitions device was discovered while scanning a passenger’s hand luggage,” it said. a Scottish Police spokesperson.

“The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service attended and the item was assessed as non-viable and posed no threat.

“A 54-year-old man was arrested and charged and released on a promise to appear in court at a later date.”

Officers charged Clark in connection with the incident, but Police Scotland did not specify what the offense was.

He has been released and will appear in court at a later date.

“A service member was involved in a security incident at Edinburgh Airport on October 16,” an army spokesperson said.

“As the matter is the subject of ongoing legal proceedings, we will not make further comment.”

According to government guidelines, imitation explosive devices, including replicas or scale models of firearms, as well as mines, grenades and other explosive military supplies, cannot be taken on board aircraft or in hand or checked baggage.
