Tips to Prevent Purse and Car Thefts During the Holiday Season

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – As you go through your holiday shopping list, the police receive a serious warning.

The Sevierville Police Department said they see more purse and car thefts this time of year.

Stacey Payne, executive director of East Tennessee Valley Crime Stoppers, offered some tips on how to prevent thefts this holiday season.

Payne said that when you’re shopping during the holiday season, “so are criminals.” The difference is that they shop while looking through our windows.

Payne also said many thefts that occur this time of year take place in store parking lots, which constitute crimes of opportunity.

“Out of sight, out of mind, this is something we need to practice, not just during the holiday season, but all year round,” Payne said.

Payne said to make sure when you’re out and about to lock your doors and be aware of your surroundings when entering and exiting stores.

“When we’re shopping, let’s say we found a good deal and we want to take this group and put them in the car and then head out for round two. The problem is, someone might be watching you in that parking lot,” Payne said. “Instead, drop them in your car, and I know it’s a pain, but go to another parking space.”

When it comes to handbag thefts, there are steps you can take to reduce your chances of becoming a victim.

“We want to make sure we keep our purse close to us, that it doesn’t get left open, and that we limit what we carry,” Payne said.

Payne said it’s a good idea to keep your bag on you and not drop it in a shopping cart. Additionally, keep cash out of sight and reduce the number of credit cards you carry in case your wallet is stolen.

“How many credit cards do you carry?” Over the years I have received reports where someone is giving me a list of 5, 6, 7, 8 different credit cards that have now been stolen that they have to deal with,” Payne said .

To take extra precaution, try to do most of your shopping in daylight or when it is busy.
