Spencer Torkelson trade, White Sox manager search, Mets on the move

The 2024-25 MLB offseason is expected to be one of the most exciting winters in recent memory. There are a ton of superstar players set to hit free agency, headlined by outfielder Juan Soto. Several Cy Young winners, including Blake Snell and Corbin Burnes, will also be available in free agency.

Players like Garrett Crochet and Luis Robert Jr. will also be available on the trading block. This offseason has the ability to change the outlook for the entire league, if enough teams are willing to take the necessary steps to win in 2025.

Buckle up, because the next few months will be filled with rumors and more regarding all 30 MLB teams.

THE Detroit Tigers were much better in 2024 than anyone expected. Despite selling out at the trade deadline, they managed to get into the playoffs and win a series against the Houston Astros.

Now, heading into the offseason, Detroit’s front office will be tasked with trying to improve their roster after having success in 2024.

Nick Deeds recently discussed MLB trade rumors the Tigers’ upcoming offseason plans, bringing up an interesting point that few media outlets have talked about.

“There is another position where the club could clearly move in free agency, and it’s one that would be shocking to suggest just a few years ago: first base,” Deeds wrote. “2020 No. 1 overall pick Spencer Torkelson was a top-five prospect in the game before his MLB debut, dubbed virtually from the day he was drafted as a can’t-miss hitter with superstar potential. hasn’t worked out, however, so far his offensive contributions in his third season in the majors have actually been below average overall.

Torkelson has been a complete disappointment during his big league career. Over 361 career games, he’s slashed .221/.300/.392 with a negative WAR and an OPS+ below 100. That’s absolutely unplayable for a top first base prospect.

Detroit could explore the possibility of trading Torkelson or looking to add a first baseman to replace him.

THE Chicago Sox are tasked with finding a new manager after firing their incumbent manager, Pedro Grifol, opting to move on to Grady Sizemore midway through the 2024 season. Grifol and Sizemore would combine to go 41-121, which would make up the one of the worst complete seasons in the history of professional sports.

Now, as the offseason gets underway, the White Sox are narrowing down their search for a new manager.

According to Jesse Rogers of ESPN, The White Sox have eliminated Los Angeles Dodgers first base coach Clayton McCullough and San Diego Padres special assistant AJ Ellis from their 2025 manager search.

MLB Insider Jon Heyman Revealed that Ellis withdrew from the race, citing “family reasons” as to why. Ellis also praised the White Sox front office staff and said he was “grateful” for Chicago’s interest in him.

Whoever ends up with the task of managing the White Sox will have an uphill battle to succeed. Chicago’s rebuild is far from over and it will take a lot of patience from whoever ends up leading this organization.

Outgoing principal Grady Sizemore is considered one of the best remaining options.

THE New York Mets are about to lose a ton of throws this offseason. Luis Severino and Jose Quintana should enter without restriction while Sean Manaea should decline his option and do the same.

Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns recently spoke to reporters about this issue, addressing the Mets’ offseason plan.

“It’s nothing new for us. We faced a similar task last offseason. We’re going to have to replace sleeves. Some of that could definitely come from having some of these guys return, or we could look elsewhere . But we’re going to have to add starting pitchers. We will have to add several starters. We understand that. We went into last offseason with the same need and I think we will be able to do it. » said Stearns.

Stearns understands the Mets’ needs this offseason and he has the right mindset to fill those innings. New York will likely be heavily pursuing some top weapons this offseason, including Corbin Burnes and Blake Snell. Even if they can’t land multiple top weapons, we expect them to fill their rotation with capable weapons. If they don’t land Juan Soto, they should be the first to bring in Burnes.
