Heaviest rain in almost three years in Victorian town

Parts of South Australia, Victoria and south-west New South Wales, which have been desperately dry in recent months, benefited from unseasonably heavy rain from Sunday afternoon to Monday morning , Mildura, in the north-west of Vic, doing particularly well.

While a trough stretching from northern Australia to Victoria helped convert plentiful atmospheric moisture into welcome rain, some of the notable rainfall totals up to 9am Monday included:

  • 42mm has Mildurawhich was the city Heaviest daily fall in nearly three years (since January 2022). This brings Mildura’s current annual rainfall total to 211.5mm, which is close to the annual average of 287.5mm – a mark that seemed well out of reach after an eight-month streak earlier this year where no month did not exceed 20 mm.
  • 21.8mm has Leigh Creekthe steepest daily fall in just over two years (since October 2022) in the small town in the North East Pastoral Forecast District where the entire population Average monthly precipitation in November is only 18.7mm.
  • 36.2mm has Renmark in the SA Riverland Forecast District. As with Leigh Creek, this is the heaviest fall since October 2022.
  • Is located between 30 and 45mm in four places in the Arid corner of south-west New South Wales.

Falls continue in northern Vic and south-west NSW through Monday, with Swan Hill recording exactly 10mm at midday on top of its 23.6mm at 9am.

As the current rain band breaks up heading southeast and heavy falls tend to ease, there will still be plenty of rain in Australia in the coming week.

As meteorologist Ben Domensino of Weatherzone explains in his story on the great stormy end of springMuch of the country can expect rain and storms over the coming week.

Parts of Victoria and South Africa that received the heaviest rain overnight are unlikely to see such large totals repeated, but parts of eastern Victoria are set to benefit from a good bit of flooding , especially the high countries (the purple patch in northeast Vic in the graph above). .

Meanwhile, the overnight news hasn’t been as positive for Adelaide residents.

Although parts of South Africa recorded good falls, South Africa’s capital once again missed out on the rain action, continuing a frustrating series of systems that seem to bypass the city. All but two months of 2024 so far have recorded below-average rainfall in Adelaide.

Melbourne is faring a little better with 5mm in the 24 hours to 9am on Monday, but it too continues a series of teasing weather conditions where spells of rain have been quite frequent, but the total is relatively light . Melbourne’s monthly rainfall totals have been below average for four consecutive months.

There is, however, some positive news for Melburnians hoping for soggy skies, with a greater than 50 per cent chance of rain in Melbourne for six of the next seven days. With any luck, parks and gardens might receive the heavy downpours that these unsettled late spring weather events tend to produce.
