Nearly half of former government officials are still looking for work

Some 13 of the last cabinet’s ministers and deputy ministers have not found new jobs four months after its dissolution on July 2, according to a count among the 29 ex-cabinet members. RTL News showed.

The fourth cabinet led by Mark Rutte and consisting of the VVD, D66, CDA and ChristenUnie was in office from 2022 until its fall in July 2023 due to a conflict over asylum measures. It was not until July of the following year that the new cabinet led by Dick Schoof took over.

Some members of the interim cabinet quickly found new jobs. Wopke Hoekstra (CDA) left to become European commissioner for climate action, while former Health Minister Ernst Kuipers (D66) also resigned early, accepting a job at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. The young Minister of Culture Gunay Uslu (D66) left to become CEO of the family travel agency Corendon.

Four VVD members from the former cabinet returned as deputies, including Dilan Yeşilgöz and Eric van der Burg.

While Mark Rutte has become NATO chiefVVD colleagues in his cabinet Micky Adriaansens (economic affairs), Mark Harbers (infrastructure), Christophe van der Maat (Defense) and Liesje Schreinemacher (foreign affairs) are still looking for a position.

D66 politicians Kajsa Ollongren (Defense), Robbert Dijkgraaf (education), Franc Weerwind (legal protection), Fleur Gräper (culture and media) and Steven van Weyenberg (finance) are also currently between positions.

Sigrid Kaag, who also left earlier, is now senior humanitarian and reconstruction coordinator for Gaza while the young Minister of Digitalization, Alexandra van Huffelen, became the new president of Radboud University.

Among the six members of the CDA, Hanke Bruins Slot (foreign affairs), Karien van Gennip (social affairs) and Vivianne Heijnen (Infrastructures) have not yet found a new position. Their colleague Hugo de Jong became temporary king’s commissioner in his native Zeeland.

Unemployed former ministers and young ministers receive 80% of their salary in the first year and 70% from the second year, depending on the number of years in office. Its duration is a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years and two months. Politicians must have been in office for at least three months to be eligible.
