Shawn Mendes says he’s ‘just figuring out his sexuality’ and ‘trying to be really brave’

Shawn Mendes opened up to fans about his sexuality, saying he’s “trying to be really brave” while he “figures it out.”

The musician and songwriter has faced rumors about his sexual orientation throughout his career, but had previously refrained from speaking about the subject publicly.

However, during a recent performance, he spoke directly to fans about how he identifies and said he was just trying to “figure it out” for himself.

“There’s this thing about my sexuality, and people have been talking about it for so long,” he said onstage at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado (via Pedestrian). “(It’s) a bit silly, because I think sexuality is such a complex thing and so hard to put into boxes.”

He then described how speciation and rumors felt like “an intrusion” into something personal, before sharing his “real truth” with the crowd.

“The real truth about my life and my sexuality is, man, I’m figuring it out like everyone else. And that’s really scary because we live in a society that has a lot to say about that,” he explained. “I try to be really brave and allow myself to be a human and feel things. And that’s all I really want to say about it for now.

Later in the performance, Mendes performed a currently unreleased song called “The Mountain.” The track also features lyrics on the subject, which nod to the way audiences have speculated about his sexuality throughout his career.

“You can say I like girls or boys/Whatever fits your mold,» he sings in the pre-chorus. “You can say I’m a fool/You can say I’m a dreamer/You can say I’ve gone too far/But I never feel better’ So call it what you want.»

As pointed out PedestrianThe rumors surrounding the singer-songwriter come shortly after he was rumored to be back together with his on-again, off-again partner Camila Cabello.

In other Shawn Mendes news, the singer recently dedicated his previously unreleased track “Heart Of Gold” to the late One Direction singer Liam Payne on stage.

He also announced that he would be postpone the release of his new album ‘Shawn’ from October 18 to November 15, with the aim of “bringing new inspirations and ideas to life.”
