The end of an era for the old ones Governor Tommy Thompson and First Lady Sue Ann Thompson.

The Thompsons sold their home on Madison’s east side. It had been their primary residence since Thompson left the governor’s mansion more than 20 years ago.

The four-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom home in Madison’s Richmond Hill neighborhood sold for $640,000 on Oct. 18, according to Metro MLS sales records.

Mayor Thompson told the Journal Sentinel that Ms. Thompson wanted a first-floor bedroom and the couple decided it was time to downsize.

“We had too many houses,” he said. “We had to get rid of someone.”

Governor Thompson left Madison in 2001 for Washington, where he served as secretary of health and human services under President George W. Bush.

Mrs Thompson began house hunting aloneThey are looking for a place to unload their ballot boxes from the governor’s mansion.

He landed in the new building in the Richmond Hill neighborhood. This subdivision was developed by real estate executive Don Hovde, who, in a little worldly coincidence, is the father of 2024 GOP Senate candidate Eric Hovde and a friend of Thompson.

Governor Thompson didn’t even see the house until the couple bought it.

After leaving President Bush’s cabinet in 2005, the Thompsons juggled many different residences, including several townhouses around Alexandria, Virginia. At one point, during Thompson’s 2012 campaign against Sen. Tammy Baldwin, lost track of him for a short time.

Governor Thompson said the couple does not have another home around D.C., but they still keep their winter home in Florida.

These days, Mrs. Thompson spends most of her time at the couple’s Lake Wisconsin home, while Governor Thompson lives on the longtime family farm in Elroy and commutes to Madison.
