Senior Appellate Division Judge Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury has been appointed to head the search committee for the formation of the Election Commission (EC).

Besides, High Court Justice AKM Asaduzzaman was made a member of the committee.

Chief Justice Syed Refat Ahmed made the recommendations, sources familiar with the matter said today (October 29), adding that a letter from the Supreme Court administration in this regard has been sent to the Division Cabinet.

Earlier today, Adviser on Legal Affairs Dr Asif Nazrul said a search committee had been formed to establish the Election Commission, marking the start of the caretaker government’s election process.

The official notification will be issued once the recommendation, sent to senior adviser Muhammad Yunus, is signed today or tomorrow, he told reporters after a meeting with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. man, Volker Turk.

When asked if there had been any discussions about the election, the councilor said there had been no conversations.

“I can tell you one thing: the process of our government preparing for elections has begun. You could say that the journey towards elections has begun,” Asif Nazrul said.

“This is because the search committee required to form the Election Commission has already been established. As far as I know, you will know once our Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus signs the proclamation. May be that he has already signed it today or that he will do so by tomorrow,” he added.

He added that once the Electoral Commission is constituted, the priority would be to update the electoral roll to eliminate false entries allegedly added by the previous government.
