Mass Effect producer says next game will retain trilogy’s ‘mature tone’

With the release of Dragon Age: The Veilkeeper On the horizon, one of the central questions is what the future of BioWare will look like. After two resounding failures Mass Effect: Andromeda And Anthemit is clear that a lot of things depend Sail guardbut this is not the only game in the works as we have seen some brief previews and details on Mass Effect 5. With the launch of the highly stylized model Sail guardBioWare executive producer Michael Gamble has allayed some fans’ fears that the next Mass Effect will still retain the tone and style of the beloved series.

One of the biggest and most obvious changes with Sail guard is its art style, which certainly seems a bit more stylized and almost cartoonish, than the previous game Inquisition. This isn’t entirely surprising though, as each Dragon Age has seen a massive shift in visual style, and Sail guard matches the aesthetics of Dragon Age 2. But Mass Effect never did that, it stuck firmly to its sci-fi trappings all the time.

Mass Effect: Andromeda was derided at launch due to an overwhelming amount of bugs and glitches, in addition to a shift in writing and focus towards the open world.

Bet taken at to address the concerns that Mass Effect 5 could follow the path of Sail guardsaying “A lot of people ask me about Mass Effect now that Sail guard the reviews are out and October 31st is near. Both are from the studio, but Mass Effect is Mass Effect. The way you bring a sci-fi RPG to life is different than other genres or IP…and needs to have different types of love.

These two series have long been BioWare staples, but their paths are wildly divergent. Dragon Age has stayed true to its RPG roots while Mass Effect takes a much more action-oriented approach. But the spirit of the series will apparently remain the same in the future. In response to a user who said Sail guard has a Pixar style, Gamble says, “I’m not sure I agree with the Pixar thing, but Mass Effect is photorealistic and will be as long as I run it.”

This means that at least stylistically, Mass Effect will remain the same, but the first trailers we’ve seen have sparked a host of questions about what the new game is about. Mass Effect 3 brought Commander Shepard’s story to a fairly definitive end, and Andromeda took a new direction – even if that direction was not well received. In this regard, Gamble states: “Regarding questions of tone: Mass Effect will retain the mature tone of the original trilogy. That’s all I’m going to say for now.

The character in Mass Effect 5 The teaser is clearly an older Liara.

The only thing we really know Mass Effect 5 is that it will take place in the future and feature Liara T’Soni, one of the most prominent members of the original trilogy. THE first teaserreleased three years ago, features a camera panning across galaxies and space wreckage before zooming to a snowy planet, where Liara unearths a piece of N7 armor, the same iconic armor Shepard wears, in a mound of snow. A second teaser released last year gives us a small scene of a mysterious character in a new N7 outfit – a trench coat of sorts.

It’s hard to build any real theories from this, but Gamble confirming that the new game will stay true to the mature, exploratory tone the series is known for should inspire some confidence. This is particularly true given the rather positive reception given to Sail guard — a game that has certain flaws but Reverse called it a “promising step forward for the series.”

With Veilguard soon in the rearview mirror, all eyes will certainly be on Mass Effect, and expectations are going to be high.

Mass Effect 5 is currently in development.
