Mass lawsuit over ‘power rankings’ throws high school sports into disarray

SPRINGFIELD — The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association is reversing course after a local judge issued a temporary restraining order preventing the governing body of high school sports from skewing rankings amid an administrative dispute.

Not for the first timeathletic directors, parents and student-athletes are at odds with the powerful agency over its rules and their impact on youth sports. Power rankings affect whether students play on their court and other benefits. If leaderboards are skewed, these benefits may disappear and players may be forced to travel miles to other sites.

This time, the parents of more than a dozen local student-athletes sued the MIAA over rankings that the plaintiffs attribute to an “ambiguous” new rule requiring teams to speculate on their entire competitive season before a certain date, even if the tournaments have not yet been settled. . The consequences could affect several sports teams whose ranking could be hampered by two forfeits.
