Meta develops AI-powered search engine to rival Google

After Perplexity, You.com, Brave and OpenAI, Meta (Facebook’s parent company) is reportedly developing its own AI-powered search engine. A new report by The information suggests that the company develop its own search engine for the Meta AI chatbot, allowing it to provide answers to current events.

From the looks of it, Meta AI’s new search powers will allow it to function like ChatGPT. SearchGPTPerplexity, and all the rest. The new report says this is an attempt to reduce Meta’s dependence on Google and Bing for the latest search queries.

According to the report, an internal source involved in the search engine’s strategic development revealed that Meta’s proprietary web crawler respond to queries with conversational responses on Meta-AI. In other words, since Meta AI is already integrated within WhatsAppInstagram and Facebook, the new search engine will offer a more personalized and integrated user experience.

Meta’s new search engine could potentially offer a more comprehensive and engaging experience, compared to the conventional keyword-based search results we’re used to. However, building a search engine from scratch is a daunting task and can take a lot of time. But, according to the latest report, Meta has been working on it for around eight months now, creating an information-rich database for the chatbot to reference.

Additionally, Meta’s crawlers were spotted made the rounds on the internet months ago, and it’s very much in line with the new report. Furthermore, recently Meta also sealed the agreement with Reuters to use its news articles for citation purposes when responding to related queries.

Although Meta’s AI-powered search engine is still in development, it poses a threat and challenge to Google’s dominance in the search space. With more and more such companies joining the search engine wagon, it’s clearer than ever that search as we know it is poised to completely change soon.
