Michael Connelly’s Latest Bestseller, ‘The Waiting,’ Introduces Renée Ballard and the Black Dahlia Murder

A: Usually I do the smart thing and rarely reread my books, so there’s no “Oh, shit, that didn’t work.” I would have liked to do better. So one of the downsides of these TV shows is that if I want to be on them, I have to re-read my books. I prefer to write like a shark: keep moving forward.

Question : Does writing and producing TV shows influence your books?

A: It is. Maddie Bosch (the daughter of Harry, a new cop in “The Waiting”) is definitely the influence of the TV series, which resonates with me. This is definitely the part I enjoyed writing the most. Until the last 10 or 12 years, with the advent of television series, on every page of my books, you saw the world through the eyes of the main character, whether it was Bosch or Haller. But when you’re doing a TV show, you can’t do that. You have to deliver the narrative. The actor can’t be present in every scene, which led the TV series to develop characters beyond what I had done in my books. And that also comes back to developing more characters in the books.

Question : You’ve said that developing Ballard’s character rejuvenated you. Are you planning new protagonists with their own series?

A: I always look to challenge myself. When writing about the same characters, there are easy things and difficult things. But there’s nothing like the fun and fulfillment of discovering a whole new person and a whole new world. There will be one more (a new one). In fact, I’m writing one now. This will be released next year.

Question : Can you say something about it? What is it called?
