Yankees fan involved in Mookie Betts incident banned from next World Series game

The Yankees released a official statement on Wednesday, October 30 following the incident between Betts, 32, and the fan identified by ESPN like Austin Capobianco. His friend, John Peter, also grabbed Betts’ ungloved hand during the play.

“The Yankees and Major League Baseball maintain a zero-tolerance policy for the type of behavior displayed last night. These fans will not be permitted to attend tonight’s game in any capacity,” the statement said. the Yankees, adding that “the safety and security of players, fans and stadium staff is the fundamental element of every event held at Yankee Stadium, and that cannot be compromised.”

Capobianco, 38, spoke to ESPN at a local bar after his and Peter’s eviction from Yankee Stadium, telling the outlet that he had no regrets about interfering with the World Series and that he and Peter “always joked about” hypothetical situations of what they would do. do if the ball approaches their “zone” of the stadium.

“We’re not going to go all out on offense. If it’s in our zone, we’re going to go ‘D,'” Capobianco said. “Someone defends, someone hits the ball. We talk about it. We’re ready to do it.”

Yet Capobianco knew his actions would result in expulsion. “I know when I’m wrong and as soon as I did, I was like, ‘Boys, I’m out of here,'” Capobianco said, according to ESPN. “I patrol this wall and they know it.”

The incident took place in the bottom of the first inning when Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres hit a deep foul ball to right field. Betts — who later called the moment “unrelated” to Los Angeles’ Game 4 loss — ran toward the wall and jumped to catch the ball.

Capobianco intervened, however, grabbing the right fielder’s glove and trying to pull the ball away. Peter then appeared to grab Betts’ wrist as the Dodgers star appeared furious with their behavior.

Betts told ESPN, “When it comes to the person in the game, it doesn’t matter,” after the Dodgers’ 11-4 loss in New York. “We lost. It’s irrelevant. I’m fine. He’s fine. Everything’s fine. We lost the game and that’s what I’m focusing on. We have to turn the page and prepare for tomorrow .”

Tuesday’s Game 4 was the Yankees’ last chance to chase the World Series. The Dodgers won the first three games of the series, including the first on a a dramatic departure from the Grand Slam by Freddie Freeman.

The first pitch of Game 5 of the World Series will be thrown at 8:08 p.m. ET on Wednesday, October 30.
