Guilty or not, Jameson Williams is a distraction the Lions can’t afford

For the second time in a week, Jameson Williams is making headlines for the wrong reasons. Williams was suspended two games by the NFL for taking a banned substance – details of which have not yet been released – but the Lions The wide receiver apologized to fans and the team. That was it, or at least that’s what we thought.

On Tuesday, a report was released claiming Williams was a passenger in a car (driven by his brother) that was stopped for a routine speed check just two weeks before his suspension. During this speed check, officers found several firearms. One of the firearms was registered to his brother, while the other belonged to Williams, although he did not have a concealed pistol permit. An arrest warrant has since been issued in connection with a charge of carrying a concealed weapon in a motor vehicle.

During the traffic stop, Williams told police he was a Lions player and was briefly placed in the back of a police car. However, he was released without even a citation. The arresting officer reportedly called high-ranking officials several times before questioning his lieutenant. Williams was then removed from handcuffs and released.

“I think there was probable cause for arrest and he was under arrest by the patrol officer,” Detroit Police Commander Michael McGinnis told WXYZ-TV. “And because of that, he should have been transferred to the Detroit Detention Center and processed.”

Williams informed the Lions of the current situation and they also released a statement to WXYZ.

“Jameson immediately let us know that he was a passenger during a routine traffic stop on October 8. We have discussed the incident with him and have kept the league informed of what we know. We understand that he was released without incident or citation. It is now our understanding that the Detroit Police Department is reviewing the matter, Jameson has retained an attorney, and we will not comment further out of respect for the legal process,” the statement said. press release.

Look, I don’t know if anything will come of this incident. The police investigation is still ongoing and Williams is unlikely to receive anything more than a slap on the wrist. However, as talented as Alabama’s third-year receiver is when he’s on the field, he’s also become a great distraction out of that.

Not only has Williams been suspended twice, but he’s now…reckless decisions far from the team premises. Williams was suspended for gambling in 2023, use of banned substances just a few weeks ago and now this?

Detroit’s passing game relies heavily on Williams’ vertical threat when he’s on the field. The defense is already missing Aidan Hutchinson, so it will have to outperform other contenders in the NFC. These incidents, many of them preventable, are starting to pile up — and the league office is watching.
