Aurora Innovation delays launch of driverless trucks until April

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Autonomous truck company Aurora Innovation says it won’t start transport cargo without a human on board until April next year, a delay from previous statements that commercial service would begin by the end of 2024.

The Pittsburgh company said Wednesday that the April launch of driverless tractor-trailers traveling from Dallas to Houston would be “slightly later” than the company expected.

The company told investors during its third-quarter earnings conference call that it had made progress in ensuring its trucks would operate safely.

The remaining obstacles are “primarily in some of the street traffic and some of the construction that we see on the highway,” CEO Chris Urmson said. “We want to have extremely high confidence in the system as we move forward.”

The company will start with about 10 self-driving tractor-trailers and grow to “dozens” of trucks by the end of next year, Urmson said.

“This change in schedule will have a negligible financial impact and will not affect our efforts to scale up on the path to self-financing,” Urmson said.

Aurora also intends to transport freight without a human driver from Fort Worth, Texas, to Phoenix later in 2025, Urmson said.

Aurora added nearly $500 million to its balance sheet in August with an August capital raise, which the company hopes will finance the initial phases of its strategy to expand driverless trucking.
