Battle your way through a haunted experience on a real naval ship!

BAY CITY, Mich. – Halloween season is here and that means all across the Mid-Michigan area there are haunted houses, forests and hayrides for fans of the spooky holiday. However, for those looking to take it to the next level this year, the Edson Incident is the attraction for you.

The USS Edson is a Forrest Sherman-class destroyer that formerly served in the United States Navy. The ship was built in 1958 and decommissioned in 1988, and after thirty years of service, it was transferred to the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum in 2012. Four years later, the Edson underwent its final transition, a change seasonal which would allow the Edson to become a haunted attraction during the months of September and October.

Ross Gifford, co-owner and operator of the Edson Incident, says there were no initial plans for the naval vessel to become a haunted attraction, but that the idea came from reported paranormal activity on the ship.

“There’s actually an actual ghost on the ship. We were paranormal investigators and that’s kind of how we got involved in this whole thing,” Gifford said.

The Edson Incident has now been going on for nine years with a different theme to spark the Halloween season. In addition to being a fun attraction during the season, it has also become a community event that everyone can participate in, whether they are learning about the ship as a patron or a volunteer.

Each year, local high school and college students are invited to volunteer as makeup artists, actors and engineers.

While the Edson incident provides a unique experience for those involved, it also helps ensure a future for the retired historic ship that hosts it. The Edson Incident is the largest annual fundraiser for the ship. Providing thrill seekers with a complete experience with monsters, skeletons and other scary elements. Once the night is over, the same volunteers help dismantle the decor that evening so that the ship can return to its normal state as a naval museum.

If you want to experience the Edson Incident for yourself, your time is limited. The Edson Incident ends on Sunday, November 1 and will not return until the upcoming Halloween season.
