Dodgers vs. Yankees score, live updates: New York seeks more World Series magic in Game 5 as Los Angeles attempts to win title

Grand Slam tournaments are fun, aren’t they? The momentum for this 2024 World Series has been driven by two of them. Freddie Freeman’s withdrawal in the first match set the tone for what would become a 3-0 lead for the Dodgers, and Anthony Volpe’s Game 4 grand slam helped the Yankees avoid a sweep, but can New York continue to ride this wave?

That will be the question the Yankees and Gerrit Cole will have to answer Wednesday in Game 5. New York’s ace (1-0, 2.82 ERA, 22 1/3 IP, 16 K, 6 BB) was shut down in Game 1, when he allowed just four hits and a point in six innings. Another stellar night from Cole could help the Yankees send the series back to Los Angeles and put pressure on the Dodgers. Jack Flaherty (1-2, 6.10 ERA, 20 2/3 IP, 14 K, 8 BB) gets the ball for Los Angeles. He was also solid in Game 1, scattering five hits in 5 1/3 innings and allowing just two runs.

A Dodgers victory in Game 5 would give the franchise an eighth World Series title, while a Yankees victory – which would come without the two fans who were banned after the Game 4 incident with Mookie Betts – would mean a Game 6 scheduled for Friday in Los Angeles.

Live28 updates

  • Chisholm finishes first on a very close play, and the Yankees have four runs left from two.

  • And Banda walks the judge. It will be Jazz Chisholm Jr. with the bases loaded and two outs. This Yankees team is very different.

  • Anthony Banda walks Juan Soto (again) and here comes Aaron Judge (again), with a man on second after Alex Verdugo reached second on a wild pitch. Nothing is going the Dodgers’ way so far.

  • Short night for Flaherty

Jack Flaherty’s evening is over, dusted. The Dodgers starter, who looked so fabulous in Game 1 of this World Series, heads to the showers after allowing four runs while recording just four outs.

His fastball velocity wasn’t reduced — which happened during his poor start in Game 5 of the NLCS — but the command was all over the place. Los Angeles will have to come back from 4 points And collect 23 more outs from their bullpen if they want to pop some bottles tonight.

  • Yankees 4, Dodgers 0

Alex Verdugo drives Anthony Volpe and it’s still all Yankees tonight. Anthony Banda replaces Jack Flaherty after 1 1/3 innings.

  • Aaron Judge is alive

That sound you just heard was that of Yankee Stadium exhaling and exhilarating; Aaron Judge homered in the World Series.

The Yankees captain had been mired in a brutal slump, entering Game 4 with just 2 hits (a single and a double) in 15 at-bats in the Fall Classic. But the man who threw 58 big flies this regular season took the first pitch he saw from Dodgers pitcher Jack Flaherty – a 94 mph fastball just down Broadway – and put it in the seats from right field.

The Yankees still have a daunting task ahead of them, but getting Judge back hot would make the task much more manageable.

  • Game 4 hero Anthony Volpe starts with a double against Jack Flaherty, who once again doesn’t look sharp in Game 5 after knocking out a New York team in the first game of a series .

  • And another 1-2-3 inning for Cole, who is up to 19 pitches in two innings. An ideal start for the Yankees.

  • Jazz is finally warming up?

Jazz Chisholm Jr. had just one RBI in the postseason before this solo homer to face Aaron Judge and send the Yankee Stadium crowd into a frenzy. It was his way into Game 2 of the ALDS against Kansas City.

Jazz have started hitting the balls harder in recent games, but it would be huge for New York if they can get hotter more as this series progresses, especially if they stay in the cleanup zone .

  • Jack Flaherty comes out of the inning with a lot of damage done. The Dodgers offense can score three runs in eight innings, but it will be an uphill battle against Cole and the Yankees bullpen.

  • Jack Flaherty could have located the two home run balls better.

  • The question now is whether anything has changed with the Dodgers’ pitching plans. They’ve been set up to deploy almost all of their late-inning arms behind Jack Flaherty to help close this out, and they could still do it with a (very long) day off tomorrow if they don’t return.

Anthony Banda is currently warming up in the bullpen.

  • So in conclusion, yes, Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm Jr. punished a Juan Soto walk.

  • Yankees 3, Dodgers 0

Jazz Chisholm Jr. takes on Judge and Yankee Stadium is officially booming. With Gerrit Cole on the mound, New York probably feels pretty good about becoming the first team to force a Game 6 after falling behind 3-0 in the World Series.

  • Yankees 2, Dodgers 0

Last night, in the middle of a five-run eighth inning, Aaron Judge hit a solid line drive single. It was his best contact of the series. Until his next at-bat.

Judge smashes a 403-foot home run off Jack Flaherty to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead, and the Yankees MVP might have finally found his swing in the postseason.

  • Juan Soto draws his fifth walk in the series. Now we see if Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm Jr. can actually punish either of them.

  • It was a seven-pitch 1-2-3 first inning for Gerrit Cole, ending with an easy fly ball right out from Freddie Freeman. We’ll call that a good start.

  • Shohei Ohtani flies out on Gerrit Cole’s first pitch, and we’re off to Game 5 of the 2024 World Series.
