Man convicted of gun possession despite felony convictions – Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indianapolis Traffic

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A jury has convicted a 57-year-old man of illegal possession of multiple firearms after he was previously convicted of felonies, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Indianapolis said.

The case against Salam Abdul Ali, of Indianapolis, began when Indianapolis Metropolitan Police officers were called Jan. 28 to a domestic dispute at a home. A woman who lived in the house reported that Ali had guns and had threatened her, her children and her brother after an argument the previous night. A press release issued Wednesday by the U.S. Attorney’s Office he did not say to give the location of the house.

IMPD returned to the home with a search warrant on Feb. 14 and found five firearms along with ammunition and firearm accessories in his bedroom. The statement did not provide details on the weapons. The officers’ body cameras recorded the raid.

Police learned that Ali’s previous name was Christopher Butler. He had changed his name after being convicted of murder in Marion County and sentenced to 60 years in prison. Online records show the case was filed in November 1986.

He had been released from state prison around 2013, according to the news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

In 2019, Ali was convicted in federal court for his role in a drug trafficking conspiracy and sentenced to federal prison.

Ali, who was on federal supervised release during the February raid, had been barred again from legally possessing a firearm because of his felony convictions.

The statement said Ali will be sentenced “at a future hearing.”

News 8 reached out to IMPD via email for a photo of Ali in jail, but did not immediately receive a response.
