Solana Beach woman tracks stolen political signs using AirTags

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Solana Beach woman says her political signs have been stolen three times. ABC 10News anchor Aaron Dickens shows how she used AirTags to track down the culprits.

“I’m totally over it. I know it’s happening in the community. It’s a non-partisan issue. It’s just getting exhausting,” says Amy Bryan.

Bryan says the last incident happened on October 26. In surveillance video she provided to ABC 10News, the person covers their face. The video shows the culprit take the sign, jump into his Bronco and drive away.

Bryan says his signs were first taken on September 19.

“The first time we had no way of knowing who committed this crime, we saw it on our driveway camera. We were just stunned that this was happening,” she says.

The next time she signed, she placed AirTags there, just in time for the second incident, which occurred on September 23.

She filed a report with the police.

“We came to a resolution. We met with the people involved and we got some satisfaction,” Bryan said.

Bryan says the teens apologized for the first two incidents in September. But she says the October incident was a different story. Bryan says it was a different group of teenagers and she was able to follow them.

AirTag tracking on his phone indicated the starting point was in his driveway.

Bryan says she followed the tags to La Jolla.

According to the app, the AirTag ended up on Calle del Cielo. 10News knocked on a few doors, but no one answered.

Later, our reporter received a call from one of the owners.

“My son and some friends took these signs as a prank. It has been fixed. It will not happen again,” the owner told us.

Even though it may be a prank, Bryan says it’s not funny.

“Is a political sign more than just a sign to you?” » asked Dickens.

“The first time it happened, it was just a sign. It was mean. Now that it has happened, it seems like intimidation. Everyone has the right to freedom of expression and everyone has the right to vote for who they want,” Bryan says.
