Marshfield man sentenced to more than 8 years in prison for illegal firearms

MARSHFIELD, Wis. (WSAW) – A 42-year-old Marshfield man has been sentenced to eight and a half years in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a felon.

Jaison Coleman will also serve three years of supervised release. He pleaded guilty to the charge on August 13.

On April 20, 2023, the Marshfield Police Department responded to Coleman’s home in Marshfield for a reported domestic violence incident. After further investigation, officers obtained a search warrant for the home and found three handguns. Coleman’s DNA was later found on all three handguns. Coleman is legally prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition due to prior felony convictions.

At the time of this incident, Coleman was on state probation for a misdemeanor battery charge. The state court judge revoked Coleman’s probation and sentenced him to 11 months in prison for the case.

During sentencing, the judge noted that this gun incident was the latest in a long series of violence committed by Coleman, particularly against women, and that Coleman’s criminal history was replete with convictions for assault and battery. The judge ruled that Coleman’s possession of a firearm in connection with the recent domestic violence incident was particularly egregious.

The charge against Coleman was the result of an investigation by Marshfield police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Central Wisconsin Narcotics Task Force.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), the U.S. Department of Justice’s program aimed at reducing violent crime.

The investigation was conducted and funded by the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF), a multi-agency task force that coordinates long-term drug trafficking investigations.
