Halloween Safety Tips – ABC13 Houston

PHILADELPHIA — Halloween is here!

While children are eager to dress up and receive candy, authorities are working to keep everyone safe.

Although we would like this spooky day to be all about fun, you also need to be aware of your safety. Halloween consistently remains one of the top three days for pedestrian accidents, particularly those involving children.

“Children are twice as likely to be hit by a car on Halloween as any other night of the year. They need to be able to see everything, and they need to be seen, too,” said Jana Tidwell , from the AAA.

We can expect to see an increased presence of children on the hunt throughout the city, but there are steps you can take to be as safe as possible.

Here are some safety tips for driving on Halloween:

– Slow down in residential areas and obey all traffic signs. You’ll want to give yourself extra time to react to children who might run into the street.

– Most importantly, keep your eyes on the road and eliminate any distractions, such as cell phones.

– For parents, AAA strongly advises that you or an adult walk with your child and ask trick-or-treaters to use glow sticks, or even carry flashlights so you are visible at night.

“Stay in a group, walk to the end of the street, cross at the crosswalk (And) cross at stop signs,” advises Tidwell.

For party-goers, arrange a safe ride home or designate a sober driver.

If you see a drunk driver on the road, contact local law enforcement.

It’s a big party, so you need to make sure you can go out and have fun, but also make sure you get home safely.
